TheAppLabb team goes to TD IRIE Festival!

TD IRIE Music Festival 2013 is a fun, free, family friendly event that showcases the best in Reggae, Salsa, World, Gospel and other tempting music.. Dance, visual arts, international cuisine and other artistic endeavors are also part of the festival’s agenda. The TD IRIE Music Festival took place in Mississauga’s Celebration Square, Oshawa’s Memorial Park and Nathan Phillips Square Downtown Toronto. The festival aims to connect the culturally diverse populations in these communities as well as showcase the best talent the city has to offer.

TheAppLabb was thrilled to be the official mobile app partner for the event! The ‘IRIE App’ provided the audience with an enhanced experience and useful features on their fingertips, such as information about the performers and artists, schedule of events, social media integration and a rich media gallery with photos, videos and music playlist. All of this was possible, with the help of robust and powerful TheEventsApp platform.

In addition to that, TheAppLabb was pleased to support the event’s initiatives. TD IRIE Festival used 100% green electricity provided by Bullfrog Power. The festival had also set up a Local Food Farmer’s Market to support local farmers that grow food with minimal carbon print. The ‘Irie Mobile App’ was recognized by helping the event go paperless.

TheAppLabb team had a booth at Nathan Phillips Square from August 2nd – 5th, with an easy access to the stage and the other festival’s attractions. (like the Local Food’s Market). Our “App Experts”, were there through the event, mainly to engage the audience to download the app. We used signs & banners with the app’s QR Codes, so the audience could scan the IRIE app with QR Code readers, just in a few seconds! Our team was ready to explain the features on the spot and to answer any questions about the application. Hundreds of people have downloaded IRIE’s app and have given us a positive feedback about it. Here is what the attendees had to say.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/PaxzMA3b2OM” title=”IRIE Festival App – Testimonial”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

TheAppLabb at the CSE Expo 2013!

We are extremely glad to have the opportunity to network with trailblazing Event Industry leaders on Thursday, March 21st, 2013, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre!

We were extremely grateful to get great feedback about the Mobile App and to closely witness its useful impact to the event’s organizers and participants. We, from TheAppLabb team, hope this is just the beginning of great partnerships with Toronto’s Events Industry.

We conducted “TheAppLabb Contest” at the EXPO’s official opening party – UNEXPECTED!. The Mobile App helped to engage users to participate in a Contest at the #Unexpected13 Party. To win a ‘Bucket Wishlist Gift Basket’, all the users had to do was to perform actions such as like, share, check-in, retweet etc. and interact with the Mobile App. The mobile app development contest was a tremendous success and encouraged attendees to participate more and resulted in creating substantial buzz about the event.

During the Trade Show, we also conducted a Contest for a chance to Win a Free Mobile App! courtesy TheAppLabb, through a Business card Draw. We’ll be announcing the winner next week, on our Blog and Social Media, so stay tuned!

Here is the testimonial of our client, about the CSE Expo Mobile App:

“Awesome!  The App is working great. Best App we’ve ever had and Kundan, you have been amazing!  We eliminated our show guide completely this year to go with the App, only after seeing how good it is, and it is getting great feedback from our conference delegates.  Very impressed!”

– Mark Wyatt, Partner, CSE Expo13

Congratulations to all the winners of the CSE Awards this year. The awards ceremony was streamed live through the Mobile App. Most importantly, thanks to everyone that came by our booth and for the CSE Expo team (as well as CityEvents and IdeaHunter teams) that provided such an amazing experience and networking opportunity.

We anxiously  look foward to next year!

Rogers TV Interview – How to establish a mobile presence for your business

TheAppLabb CEO, Kundan Joshi was interviewed on “In Business” with David Wojcik last monday, March 11th, on Rogers TV.

The discussion was about what is the ideal type of app for different kind of businesses and which are the important steps to take when planning and developing it: starting from which strategy to choose, to which problems the app should be solving, until its design and how to deliver the best user experience.

[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/j-1SO3Fmiss”][vc_column_text c_id=”.vc_1496083668928″]Interview:

David Wojcik – Have you got a great idea for a new App but don’t know where to get help to comercialize it? Enter TheAppLabb & Kundan Joshi will help you with your strategy, design and mobile application development in Toronto.

David Wojcik – So, tell us in about 30 seconds exactly what you do for people who have apps because you design it, you develop the strategy and you actually build the app.

Kundan – It pretty much goes like that! Obviously it depends on who the client is. We start with the strategy, the idea mostly comes from the client, we start with the idea, we figure out what it’s the best way to put it to market, what’s the best way to create it. Then, taking all the ideas, we create a road map for the mobile app, design it (our designers do that) and then, we develop it. After development, the job is just half done, because you need to publish it and make sure the app works, creates revenue and really achieves the goal. So pretty much end to end we help our clients to ideation to making that successful!

David Wojcik – Do you ever have people come in and they give an idea for an app and you just look and you go: “This is never going fly” and is it your responsibility to tell the client that this is really not a good idea.

Kundan – In a way yes! I try to make them realize what they are really looking for. The main key is what is their audience really looking for? What problem of your user/customer are you trying to solve. If I ask the right qualifying questions, if it’s off the mark they’ll have a realization themselves and in a lot of times, ideas can be tweaked and improved as we go along. We also help clients create prototypes. We’ll create a semi-polished version of the app, which you can then publish and get user feedback and understand better, Is that app really what they were expecting it to be? Alfa version, basic – really new.

David Wojcik – What makes a good app these days? That’s gotta be over a Million Apps considerably speaking, there must be a Million Apps between Android, iPhone, Blackberry and Web Apps. So what makes a good app these days?

Kundan – It depends on what your consumers are looking for, what your business stands for, and how can you give them the best experiences, create the best amount of revenues and really be there solving their problem. If it’s not a brand that’s doing the app, if it’s a technology startup that’s trying to create the to generate revenue – that’s to solve a unique problem. Considering a Million apps, a lot of problems are getting solved every single day!  Obviously is about distinguishing yourself as well. So all those factors have to be considered, you have to have a really good strategy to start with. Don’t just go into it without thinking it through. There is a sense of urgency, but you have to approach it the right way. Create the strategy.

David Wojcik – So when you are building Web Apps and apps for mobile devices. Would it be the same architecture for a web designed app as it would be for a mobile app? And if it isn’t, what’s the difference?

Kundan – A lot of differences. One aspect: within the mobile sphere itself, a basic approach would create a website and make it more responsive. Your website will look a certain way on your desktop, when you pull it up on your mobile it will shrink so that the fonts are the same size, the experience is on the same way but you can still view it on your mobile phone. Or you create a mobile site specific for your phone. Or you create a Native App specific for your platform which can work online or offline – it’s almost like downloading a software on your computer. Even with your phone apps you’ll have Native version and Hybrid version, which are different, because if you want to publish it on multiple platforms then you choose a hybrid version. Where you can publish it on the iPhone and the Android or Blackberry phones.

David Wojcik – So when you have a Hybrid version, does that mean it does not work well on any device?

Kundan – Again, it depends on what you are trying to do.  If you are trying to build a game, you need a native app, because you need experience. If your app is all about put content from the web, than hybrid would be just fine. Again, it depends on the kind of experience you are trying to give to your audience. In some cases, you may not need an app at all. Just the web or the mobile site it’s good enough.  There are a lot of advantages between web and mobile site X native app. Ability to provide push messaging, ability to view content offline whether or not your 3G is working.

David Wojcik –  I’ve seen some of the apps that come out and some are free, they have a limited number of features that you can use, which causes you to now need to upgrade. And it could be 99 cents, it could be $ 9,99, it could be $ 19. Is that a strategy that you recomend? To give people a little taste, and then when you get them to hop in, then you start charging.

Kundan – That is the most successful strategy that is working right now. Just in app purchases by itself, 2 years behind were more than a billion dollars. Approaching next year, we’ll be reaching 6 Billion dollars of revenue just in in app purchases. The advantage of a free app is, you give the user the carrot and they start liking it. Angry Birds are a perfect example you can download the free version, you get addicted to it, and you don’t have a choice, you are just lured into buying the new features, the premium apps etc.. Yeah, it is a fantastic strategy.

David Wojcik – Without going in exactly what you charge for an app, maybe it’s not even your number. Give us a ball park and I know that an App can go as Sky is the limit, But if you are looking for a functional app that you would consider to be a decent one, what’s the starting number?

Kundan – One of the things that we do at TheAppLabb is trying to simplify the process of any kind of consumer, so as you said, in terms of “The limit is the Sky” in terms of smaller apps, if I’m developing from scratch a basic app. Around 5 to 10 K would be the minimum. However, companies like us would develop platforms which can help you release your app at the very minimum cost. Our cheaper version of apps cost as low as 2,000 or even lower in some cases.

David Wojcik – So when we’re at that range, if we are in the 5 to 10 thousand range and the number i‘ve heard was 15,000 as well, that’s a lot of 99 cents that you have to sell in order to make a profit. Is the goal of the app always to make a profit or are there other goals that you would put into other strategies you would put into building an app?

Kundan – There are several goals. The revenue model has to be very defined for an app. One revenue model is you’ll download individual apps and you charge for every single app that you download. The other approach is ad supported, where you have ads running on your app, whether is ads directly from the platforms or your phone sponsored ads. For that you need a lot of volume in terms of downloads. The other approach is terms of you tie-in another revenue model of yours, so say, if you have a website where you are selling subscriptions, now you have a mobile app. So you are adding another advantage, or you have an e-commerce website, now you want to sell your stuff on your mobile phone as well – that’s another way. In terms of companies, brand awareness, event awareness it’s a huge tool as a part of marketing for events, ticketing… So all those things tie in, mainly because phone is where every user or every consumer has. So you have to target them.

David Wojcik – Thanks Kundan! Lot’s of great information![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Advantages of defining a mobile strategy

Advantages of defining a mobile strategy

Research conducted in 2012 indicates that by 2015 the tablet sales will out- number the desktop sales in North America.

Today’s consumer prefers smaller portable devices. This behavior is instigating brands to define or redefine their mobile strategies at a much faster rate.

Here are some findings of Google’s latest mobile survey:

  • 96% of mobile users said that they encountered a website that is not mobile friendly
  • 67% of mobile users said that if the site is mobile friendly they are more likely to purchase something.
  • 48% of mobile users said even if they like a brand a non-mobile friendly site annoys them.

Here are some more unfathomable statistics:

  • Over 65 million tablets were sold in 2011
  • Smartphone usage tripled in 2011
  • Apple sold more IOS devices in 2011 than MACs in 28 years

These statistics definitely make the mobile platform lucrative to target for the brands.

There are several distinct advantages of defining a mobile strategy, as follows:

Advantage #1

First advantage is that, it makes your organization to start thinking about moving with the change. Most companies relate to online presence only through desktop browsers and not through mobile yet. But what do consumers want today? Do they want the ability to reach your brand only at home, on a desktop? No.

Consumers want to be in touch with your brand everywhere. That’s why Mobile user experience (UX) is a common topic for debate. There are many devices, but the information shared needs to be narrowed down.

Today, customers might be forgiving for not having a mobile site or mobile app, but within the next 6 to 12 months they will end up choosing your competitor who caters to their convenience through mobility. Mobile strategy should be considered as an essential exercise to create new ideas and concepts to appeal to your customers on a new platform.

Advantage #2

Second advantage is to leverage off the overwhelming adoption rate. Mobile Adoption is happening in a much more uniform way. Now, mobile applications are prevalent in every age group. It does not fall under a young demographic only anymore.  Moreover, mobile-use is not confined to developed countries, but is becoming a global phenomenon. According to a recent article, 75% of the world’s population has access to a mobile device, by 2016 – 80% of North American population will have smart phones.

Prices are low and performances are high. That’s the reason why the adoption rates are so high in present times.

Brands should realize that there are no more barriers. There is a market that counts up to 75% of the world. This is your market! Developing an effective mobile strategy makes you think about getting new customers that you have not targeted earlier.

Mobile strategy is planning, practice and performance.  It is the meeting of business goals, user needs and evolving mobile opportunities.

Here are some tips on how you can kick off creation of mobile strategy:

• Current mobile experience:

Test the current mobile experience of your brand. How easy and seamless is it to view your website on various mobile devices and engage with it, by making purchases, browsing, contacting, commenting etc. Is it annoying or difficult to get through?

• Analytics:

Check your website analytics to check how many users are accessing your website using mobile devices

• Competitor Analysis:

Analyze the mobile strategy of your competitors. Do they have mobile apps?

• Customer Analysis:

Ask your customers, about what features they are looking for in an app. Also analyze the mobile usage statistics among your customer demographic.

• Ask the Experts:

Ask leaders in mobile app development in Toronto like TheAppLabb for insights, experiences, best practices, recommendations. Feel free to email us at info@theapplabb.com anytime.

• Introspect:

Brainstorm internally to confirm your business goals, so that mobile strategy can be designed to support your goal, without changing your business focus

• Act:

Pen down your thoughts, determine the success factors, put together a team that will take the onus, engage a partner like TheAppLabb.

A successful mobile strategy involves inspection of your business, customers, competition and market to derive strategic insights on what should we do and how? Mobile Strategy involves weighing impact of mobile against need and costs to identify effortless gains, tactical investments and radical goals.

Mobile Strategy definition will ensure that mobile efforts are consistent with actual user needs and expectations; aligned with overall business strategy, using best technology practices, pursued with clear accountability and inter-disciplinary involvement.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
