Our Top 12 Tips to prevent hacks and security breaches on your mobile app

With the recent hacker attack that breached the security of the Starbucks app, it has brought to light the importance of implementing all the measures necessary to ensure security for your mobile app.

Based on our extensive experience of app development in Toronto here at TheAppLabb in building secure mobile apps, we have compiled a list of different practices that mobile apps can incorporate to prevent hacks and security breaches:

1. Single SignOn: The user should be able to sign in from only one device at a single point of time.

2. OAuth: We can provide a 3 layered security to the user between the back-end application and the front-end mobile app through OAuth implementation (as implemented with apps like twitter and Instagram). OAuth is basically an authentication protocol that allows users to approve the application to act on their behalf without sharing their password. Additionally we can protect the web services with rate limit functionality in order to protect from over-hitting of the server. Rate limiting helps control the rate of traffic sent or received by a server or network.

3. Single Sign on with OAuth: To enable users to have more secured transactions from only one place at a single point of time, we can integrate Single Sign on Mechanism with OAuth functionality.

4. Registration: To prevent registration of fake users, and fake user information, we can implement Email verification and Captcha. One-time password (OTP), which is a password valid only for one login session or transaction, can also be implemented.

5. Encryption: All the important data that is transferred between the mobile application and the Server should be in an encrypted format. This means that the data on the network layer even if accessed from outside won’t be in a readable format. RSA and SHA encryption techniques are effective techniques for the same.

6. WhiteList IP: To prevent in-house applications and Enterprise Applications from being accessed from outside, it is essential to whitelist the IP address as a check point.

7. Https: All the data that is associated with commercials should be transported on the Https layer.

8. Touch ID: In iOS, Touch ID mechanism can e integrated, as an authentication to prevent the app form being used by unknown users even if the phone is lost.

9. Analytics: It is important to keep a track of all app related activities through analytics. It is useful to track the app usage, as well as track the IP and method of each transaction. For e.g., Utilizing test fairy we can track activities as screenshots along with internet provider information and timestamp.

10. Two Factor Authorization: In case of mobile transactions, two-factor authentication can be instituted into the app, requiring a person to enter a separate code before making changes to the account. That way the user will need to validate account changes and or be tipped off to activity in their account.

11. Block Access: If too many incorrect password attempts have been made, then the app should block access to the account in order to prevent brute forcing.

12. Terms & conditions: Especially for apps which feature purchases utilizing mobile wallet, it is important to have terms and conditions in place to bind the fraudulent user. So that if a user is flagged for making fraud activities, then legal action can be undertaken against the user.

Apple’s ResearchKit is exciting for the future of medicine

Apple’s ResearchKit is exciting for the future of medicine

Apple’s ResearchKit framework has a great potential to produce significant changes in the area of Big Health Data.

Medical researchers can now develop iOS apps that will help them recruit participants for their studies, without the need for the participants to set foot in their labs. As it is very challenging to recruit patients for a study, this will be a great benefit to medical research, especially considering the large number of iOS users. As quoted by Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, from American Heart Association –

“Numbers are everything. The more people who contribute their data, the bigger the numbers, the truer the representation of a population, and the more powerful the results. A research platform that allows large amounts of data to be collected and shared — that can only be a positive thing for medical research.”

By giving everyone with iOS device an ability to track their symptoms and share them with doctors, it has potential to help people in a big way. Medical practitioners can analyze the data and provide expert feedback, which can have huge impact on an individual’s health.

Apps have already been launched using ResearchKit to help patients of Parkinson’s Disease measure dexterity, balance, and agility; help diabetes patients manage their conditions; help people detect their risk of heart disease, and for breast cancer patients to help track their post-treatment experiences.

TheAppLabb is currently working with its clients in the field of medicine and medical research, to come up with innovative solutions by leveraging on ResearchKit to solve the needs of their patients and their research departments. The possibilities are endless![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

1. Tell us what gave you the idea to start TheAppLabb? And give us an insiders point of view about then and now.

The advent of smartphones has changed the world in a big way. Smartphones now act as our full time companions, problem solvers, navigators, communicators, educators, entertainers, organizers, and so much more. Smartphones also give us an ability to imagine possibilities, of changing others lives, making them simpler, more efficient, more fun through the world of apps. I got fascinated and driven to explore those possibilities by venturing into the app world. Being an engineer, I was a problem solver by nature. During my time at my previous business venture, Joshi Inc, a digital agency, I enjoyed pitching products ideas to my clients, to solve their existing operational problems. One fine day, I realised that product development of innovative mobile apps is what truly excites me, considering its potential and the abilities of mine and my team’s. So we pivoted, and TheAppLabb was born!

Before starting TheAppLabb, our team already had some experience in designing and developing mobile apps, so it was just a matter of proving ourselves. Our skills, knowledge and expertise kept growing with every product that we designed and engineered. Today, after having delivered several hundred apps, we are hailed as industry experts and leaders in strategy, design and mobile app development in Toronto. Having served some of the biggest brands and most innovative start ups. Apart from our service offerings, we also have our own suite of products, such as TheEventsApp, TheRetailApp and TheLearnApp among others. Through our initiative – StartupLabb, we also invest in several early stage startups, to empower entrepreneurs to make their dream ideas into reality. Today, TheAppLabb stands at over 50 employees, with offices in Toronto, New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Mumbai. From the industry perspective, while the potential existed when we started, today, it has actualized. With 90% of North American adults being owners of cell phones, 90% of whom are within an arm’s length of their phones at all times, the possibilities of impacting their lives through smartphones and apps are endless.

2. You’ve been associated in multiple businesses so would you consider yourself to be a pro at knowing what works and what doesn’t in today’s technologically driven market?

There are several factors that determine the viability of a product. Does an app or a technology serve as a solution to a genuine problem? What is the depth or breadth of the problem and that of the solution? Is it a unique idea to a particular market segment? If there are competitors, what are the differentiators of the idea? How big is the market size? What percentage of that market can the product capture? What are growth and scalability possibilities? What is the revenue model? Based on these and several other questions, the chances of user adoption and profitability can be determined. I and my team are experts are guiding a product idea through all these validations, and using our experience to determine the chances of an idea’s success. Once validated, we have a fool proof process to create a strong product strategy, a beautiful user experience and design and engineer a great product. User and stakeholder feedback is taken at every stage of the process to ensure the acceptability of the product, followed by a strong marketing strategy and execution. Our strong process, depth of knowledge and experience and great intuition does make me and my team at TheAppLabb a PRO at determining and executing a successful product in today’s technologically driven market.

3. Your organization develops apps for web and mobile. What’s the difference and how do they work in their own realm?

Apps stand for software programs that are designed and developed to fulfill a particular purpose. Platform for the app depends on how users of the app prefer to use it. Once usability is determined, our organization can develop apps on any platform, whether it be mobile devices like iphone, ipad, android, blackberry or windows or web or desktop or even wearables like google glass, iwatch, and internet of things. Skill sets required to develop apps on each of these platforms is different, so we constantly hire the brightest minds to engineer best products.

4. You mentioned that App Labb looks at start-ups, in a given day how many people approach your company? And how do you differentiate between mundane or has been to saying Eureka! this is a brilliant idea!

On an average day, about 40 to 50 startups approach us from all across the world. Our inbound business development experts go through a pre-qualification process to distil these leads. The filtered leads are then put through validations mentioned earlier, so that proper ground work is done before we start building a product, as we want to ensure that all products we create are set for success. The Eureka feeling is part process and part intuition. Sometimes you just know in the gut that it is a brilliant idea, and sometimes you dont. But regardless of the gut feeling, the process of validation usually determines the chances of an idea’s success. Being an engineer, process is very important to me. If I think the idea is brilliant, but actual users of the product don’t think so, it is pointless.

5. Talk to us about establishing your company globally, and what exactly are your goals in each of these markets?

While our head office is in Toronto, we are constantly opening up offices and forging partnerships across the world. Apart from Toronto, we now have presence in New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Mumbai. In the next year we plan to extend our presence to San Francisco, Middle east and Europe. Main goal in expanding our presence is to cater to these markets, whether enterprise or startups, through our services and products.

6. Your clients are reputable, and industry leaders in their own right. How did you market your organization to them?

Our though leadership is our strongest marketing tool, which drives most of our customers to us. Our inbound marketing channels include Search Engine marketing and Social media marketing. We also have a strong outbound sales team that directly approaches our potential clients. It is very important for us to educate our clients, evaluate their product idea and provide our thought leadership to ensure that the foundation of a good product has been built before we take on a project.

7. Having said that, tell us about your roster of clients, and how you’ve helped them succeed? Give us the scoop with real success stories

On the enterprise side, our clients include the likes of Unilever, Samsung, Dell, Rogers, Toronto International Film Festival, Canadian International AutoShow, Rogers, Rapala, Ontario Real Estate Association, World Media Festival, among others. The first app we built was for the AutoShow, which made it easy for the event audience to navigate through the show as well as participate in contests. The app helped increase the customer engagement and outreach by over 1200%. While our employee contest app for Dell application provides the sales agents at Dell Canada to compete in a trivia game, to improve product knowledge, and boost their motivation via gamification, which has resulted in increased sales for the company. On the startup side, we have helped build several innovative products from Locawoka – which enables users to outsource their daily chores, to 42 Sports – which enables sports fans to engage with each other and with players. One such startup, Urbery, which I co-founded, is disrupting the grocery sector. People can order their grocery online, and get it delivered to their home in less than 2 hours. It has received great acceptance and feedback from our customers, while being featured by various media outlets like Canadian Grocer and BlogTO.

8. Would you like to present your business model, and the revenue generated in the past one year?

For our services, we work on fixed price or dedicated team models, while for our white label products we charge licensing fees. Startups that we invest in have various business models, from paid apps, to in-app purchases, to ad revenues to direct transactions. Our company has been growing by 400% consistently in the last 4 years.

9. How aligned are you in your thinking with the Mark Zuckerberg, Kevin Systrom or Ben Silbermann? Or how different?

In similarities, I think we all are passionate about what we do, as well as passionate for building innovative products with great user experience. We all intend to stay true to our purpose and we all care about building strong teams and partnerships. Difference would be that my net worth is not in 9 figures yet, but I intend to bridge that gap soon!

10. Does your organization just help launch the prototype, or are you also looking to sell the ideas for billions of dollars?

Depends on our mode of engagement. For our clients, we help them launch the prototype as well as continue to help them launch the newer versions of their product in an iterative cycle. For the startups that we invest in, we certainly intend to sell them for billions of dollars!

11. When hiring personnel at TheAppLabb, what are the chief characteristics you look for? And how many employees do you currently have in Toronto, and globally

We like to hire people who have both the requisite skills and the right outlook. Apart from that, it is important for them to be passionate about technology, have a sense of good user experience, up to date with tech trends, an appetite for constant learning, and have an entrepreneurial flair. We intend to keep our company as lean as possible by hiring great people. In the long run, our people will always be our main competitive advantage. Currently, we have over 50 employees globally.

12. What do you think are the pros and cons in a world driven by mobile apps? Do you think that even though it’s called ‘the social network’, there is very little of human interaction

There are several pros. Ability to communicate seamlessly with family, friends and coworkers; ability to be connected at all times, to find any information that you need; to increase your efficiency and accessibility by finding nearest restaurants, or book a cab or order groceries; to entertain ourselves by music, videos or games. Like anything else, excessive use has its disadvantages. Smartphones and apps are meant to support your life, so they should be treat as that.

13. Do you have a message for the youth in this regard?

Balance is very important with everything in life. It is important to live in the present moment and enjoy real life human interactions. So focus on the person you are having a conversation with or the task at hand, and let smartphones serve you as an aide and not a distraction.

14. And finally, what drives you as an entrepreneur? Also, let us know what the future holds for TheAppLabb, maybe an app that can be used in space?

The ability to do what I am passionate about day in and day out, which is to find and create, innovative and creative solutions to problems. The ability to help others succeed, my clients, partners, my team, entrepreneurs. To stay true to our vision of building an everlasting industry leading technology company, to solve problems, make human experience easier & make a difference in the world. These are my drivers as an entrepreneur.

At TheAppLabb, we continue to grow as an innovation hub in the field of mobile technology. We work on great ideas on a daily basis, and will keep on building innovative products. We will also continue to invest in high potential startups to ensure that driven entrepreneurs with great ideas are able to build equally great products. The future holds endless possibilities, I am just excited to be a part of the journey!

New sports app, 42 Sports, powered by TheAppLabb, launches for Super Bowl with thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes to give away

First set of users will compete to win prizes in the app’s Super Bowl Social Competition

TORONTO, ON (January 27, 2015) – 42 Sports, the mobile app that allows sports fans to interact directly with athletes, sports experts and other fans on a game-by-game basis in a highly engaging manner, has soft launched for the Super Bowl and will be giving away thousands in prizes.

The app is the first product launched by Social Capital Ventures Inc., a company dedicated to creating more engaging online platforms by utilizing people’s social power.

“42 Sports provides on-the-go and second screen convenience. 53% of devoted sports fans use a tablet or smartphone to access online sports content while watching sports on TV and 25% of casual sports fans do the same, with those numbers growing every year,” 42 Sports’ Chief Product Officer, Tania Hew, stated. “We cater to that market and have added many features designed to keep them engaged before, during and after games.”

The app provides real-time interaction with sports experts through post threads and a video feed. There is also built-in gamification through polls, quizzes, a points system, leaderboards, digital rewards and real-world rewards per game. This gamification will be brought into play for its Super Bowl Social Competition. To promote its soft launch, 42 Sports will be giving away thousands of dollars in prizes to the top three users with the most points in-app for the Super Bowl game. Other prizes will also be awarded. To enter, users simply have to download the free app, sign up and start using it. The experts for the Super Bowl game include a current CFL player, a CFL coach and a known sports radio & television personality.

“The name 42 Sports was inspired by the jersey number of the late great Jackie Robinson, one of my idols. In the same way that Jackie Robinson broke new ground, so do we aim to break new ground with our app,” said CEO & Founder, Marc Schwalb.

The app is available on iOS and Android. The Super Bowl Social Competition runs from January 19 to February 8.

Apple Inc to raise iPhone and iPad app prices – Check our CEO’s interview

Apple Inc. will be raising the price of the cheapest apps available in its Canadian App store, according to an email sent to software developers last week. CEO of our app development company, Kundan Joshi was interviewed by The National Post about this topic, where he shared his insights on how this change might affect in-app purchases and the overall experience.

Developers take the wait times, consistent guideline changes and this week’s price adjustment in stride, because Apple users are more eager to part with their money. “Most paid apps make more money on Apple than [on] Android so it’s sort of a trade-off that most developers are willing to do,” Mr. Joshi said.

App store sales rose 50% in 2014, and developers earned over US$10 billion from app sales over the course of the year, Apple said Thursday.

Mapping Applications and Travel App limitations – Check our CEO’s interview on Global News

Our CEO, Kundan Joshi was interviewed by Global News on January 8th in regards to Mapping Applications and Travel App limitations. Many users have faced issues while using these Apps in remote areas. A very recent incident in British Columbia, where a runner got lost in a park, illustrated the limits of relying only on mobile technology. See our CEO’s insights about these navigation apps.

One of the key factors limiting the effectiveness of mobile travel apps is the quality of the data underpinning them.

Kundan Joshi, Chief Executive of Toronto mobile app development company The App Labb, said most navigation apps depend on third-party maps prepared by Google.

The tech company is constantly deploying staff to make sure their maps are current, but Joshi said they can’t always keep up to changing landmarks or include the kind of detail that regional cartographers would include. “To have the most accurate data becomes a big challenge,” he said.

An increasingly popular solution is social mapping tools that allow users to add information and correct inaccuracies as they travel, but even those have their limits, Joshi said.

Apps with thorough, detailed maps would exceed the strict space limits assigned by services like Apple’s App Store, Joshi said. Even if apps circumvented that limit by forcing users to download map databases separately, the phones themselves may not have space to store them, he added.

How to Launch Your App Idea

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text c_id=”.vc_1496156765518″]

How to Launch Your App Idea

As the Mobile industry is booming and many startup successes are emerging, there are a lot of App ideas that seem within an arm’s reach. But before you start dreaming big, there is some advisable homework one should do before approaching a mobile app developer in Toronto or your future investors/partners.

There are a lot of problems out there which need to be solved. There are also many ideas to be explored & executed. Then, how do you make sure your idea is actually viable and on the path to your desired goals?

Before you begin, it all starts with Planning. “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!”― Benjamin Franklin

Hence, let’s start with the question:
Why having an App Strategy is so important?

Planning, researching, analyzing & validating are the first steps to your Mobile roadmap. Seems too overwhelming? Well, let’s understand why they are important:

  • You see a problem and come up with lots of ideas. From those ideas, you shortlist some, and a few more – to finally arrive at ‘The Big Idea’.
  • But before you get married to ‘The Big Idea’ it is important to test & validate it, to understand if this idea already exists, if you are actually solving a unique problem that has not been solved yet or offering a better solution.
  • That’s where ‘User Validation’ comes in. Understanding the user and letting them play with your idea gives great insight into whether or not there is a market for your App. But that’s not the only thing.
  • It starts with an idea and grows into a business. Whether it is a social venture or a for-profit business idea, like any business, as many aspects as possible need to be considered before taking the plunge.
  • Next comes ‘Growth Validation’ – What is your Revenue Strategy and how will you be able to make money to sustain & grow the business.
  • Which platforms do you want to choose to reach your target audience? From iOS to Android, to Wearables, the choices are endless and constantly growing, how do you make the right choices?

It is important to understand that creating a successful App is a step-by-step journey, which involves, critical thinking, user empathy & strategic decision. Shortcuts are only in movies and well, maybe a very few exceptions, but to ensure your chances of success are higher with lesser side trails, it is important to have a plan and good advisors to help you through the process.

To deliver & implement your app ideas into powerful solutions for real world success, we are always open to hearing your ‘Big Idea’.

The interview went live all across Canada, on August 12th, 2014 on City News Channel 7 in Toronto.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/d_Yv_JcEUAE”][vc_column_text c_id=”.vc_1496156547390″]If you use Facebook on your phone, you may have noticed that is now mandatory for you to download the separate Facebook Messenger App, in order to send and receive messages. The application does come with many more features, like voice messaging, texting contacts on your phone, and making free phone calls. The main concern for users is a list of things Facebook Messenger needs access to, for example your contacts, photos, and microphone.

Kundan says – “It has a lot of features. So, more features means more permissions that they require to access. They have the ability for you to record your voice and send it to a friend. You need access to microphone to do that.”

It may feel scary to give Facebook access to your entire phone and all your personal information, but some local app developers are saying “not to worry – it seems scarier than it is, and that’s all because of the way it’s presented. Specially on Android devices.”

Kundan says – “If you look at the iOS, the iPhone App for Facebook Messenger, you will get that particular permission, to access your audio recorder or your camera, when you are using that particular feature, whereas in Android you have to accept all the permission before hand.”

Facebook may be taking the heat, but it’s important to know that many other apps like Snapchat, Instagram,  and Chrome Web browser are all requesting access to the same features. Despite concerns, Messenger is currently the number 1 downloaded free app at the app store.
